Microdermabrasion is the perfect, no down time procedure to freshen and brighten the skin by gently exfoliating the superficial layers of the skin. It should be done every few months for maintenance or can be done as a series of treatments in close succession to address surface tone and texture.
Facials are a nice way to relax and maintain the hydration and health of the skin. These can be customized to your specific skin type and can be done even monthly.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends SPF 30 or above and sun protection measures. In general , we want our melanoma survivors to avoid direct sun between 10 and 2. However, that does not mean you should not enjoy life! Please use a wide brimmed hat and “rash guard” clothes with built in SPF. Remember to schedule your regular full body checks with your dermatologist as well.
Again, following the AAD guidelines, Vitamin D should be obtained from supplements and diets. The amount of sun exposure needed to generate Vitamin D can cause skin cancer in some at-risk individuals. Please enjoy life, but do it in a “sun-smart” way. As a friend once said to me “getting Vitamin D from the sun is like eating cheese pizza to get Calcium.”
Beta-carotine is an anti-oxidant and can help protect the skin from sun damage. It is a great adjunct, with topical vitamin C, to negate free radicals (toxic molecules formed from sun-exposure). However, do not just rely on beta-carotene, please continue to use your sunscreen too!
Hyperpigmentation of any form can be aggravated by UV exposure. Melasma, a common type of pigmentation that forms on “contoured” areas of the face, such as the upper lip and brows, is typically managed with SPF products for prevention as well pigmentation management products such as Vitamin A, Hydroquinone, Kojic Acid.
Misty- ‘red and leathery’ is not a good look and can be helped! Start by finding a sunscreen in a gel, or oil-control formulation (Cetaphil makes oil control sunscreen that is inexpensive, ELTA MD has a gel form that is a little more pricey). You can also get the powder SPF products that give you a “matte” look and combat the redness as well, with good broad spectrum sunscreen (Jane Iredale and IS Clinical both make good products). The redness can be combatted with green tinted make-up as well as prescription products from your dermatologist.
During the summer, it is very important to use sun protection. You should use a minimum SPF 30 each morning. If you are going to be outdoors, you should reapply every hour or two. Use water resistant products if doing water activities or sweating.
It is typical to become more sensitive to the sun as we age. Our cell turnover decreases as we age (kids skin heals rapidly- I see a scratch on my kids faces and they are healed in what seems like 5 minutes!) making us more prone to age spots, burns and wrinkles. It becomes very important to regularly use broad spectrum sunscreen and incorporate anti-oxidants and retinoids for repair of the skin as well. Retinoids (prescription Vitamin A topicals) actually thicken the dermis, thus helping plump and freshen the skin!
Removing age spots at home is often quite difficult as over the counter bleaches are not super effective on them. The best plan would be to see your dermatologist for a prescription bleaching cream and possibly consider laser treatments during cool weather if this doesn't provide enough results.
A good alternative to your aftershave lotion is to use a facial moisturizer with SPF in it, a minimum of SPF 30. If your skin tends to be sensitive, look for one that helps to control redness, as these often contain anti-inflammatory ingredients as well.
To begin with, if you really feel your sweating is excessive, you may need to see a doctor for investigation of thyroid and other tests. If your sweating is within normal, it is important to note, that you can never apply too much sunscreen. Given your skin tone, a powder blend may be very nice for your complexion and tone. Again, I like IS Clinical, ColorScience, and Jane Iredale.
Over the counter retinoid creams are a great way to get started on treating aging concerns. Certainly, stronger ones are available from your dermatologist, but drugstore brands are a great way to start. Some of my favorites include Roc and Neutrogena. If your skin tends to be sensitive, start them every other night instead of daily and work up to tolerating them more frequently.
Danny, this issue should be investigated by your dermatologist or the doctor who performed the mole removal. There is unfortunately no home ready for this, please get this checked.
Certainly the sun is less strong after 3:00 pm. However, I would still recommend that you take your walk with a minimum of SPF 30 on all exposed parts. We know now, that any tan, means damage is happening in your skin. If you want to look tan, use a self tanning cream which is safe.
Dark under eye circles can be cause by a few different things, including hyperpigmentation and shading, as well as the thinning effect over time. Address thinning by treating with dermal fillers to plump can reduce the appearance of shading under the eyes. Eye creams often include topical antioxidants that help with collagen remodeling and cell turnover that help with thinning and hyperpigmentation.
Brown spots on the cheeks are most often caused by either sun or a hormonal situation caused melasma. The best way to determine this is to visit your dermatologist. The sun spots are much easier to treat than the melasma, as this tends to recur more easily.
The standard of care for treating a squamous cell cancer on the face is Mohs surgery. In this procedure, a small margin is taken around the tumor and the surgeon checks all of the edges and base to make sure that the tumor is removed in its entirety. Only areas that still contain tumor are then removed in stages. It is actually the most tissue-sparring procedure available. Without Mohs a larger area would need to be removed.
Please avoid L-Glutathione! I am of Indian descent and there have been many reports of patients in India and Pakistan using at home high levels of glutathione and sustaining toxic reactions and even death. Embrace your natural skin tone and brighten with natural, healthy products such as kojic acid and retinoids.
In general, one should follow the ABCDEs to look for concerning lesions or melanoma. A- asymmetry, B-border, C-color, D-diameter greater than 6 mm, E-evolving or changing. If your lesion meets any of these criteria, it should be evaluated by a dermatologist. Unfortunately, I cannot diagnose your lesion, so I suggest it be evaluated.
Mosquito bites can be quite troublesome. If you tend to get brown spots from them, start treating them as soon as they happen with over the counter cortisone cream and benadryl cream three times daily. If they have already turned brown, use some over the counter bleaches and HIGH SPF - closer to 50 - to keep them protected from the sun.
Chemical peels can help to refresh the skin. However, the amount of improvement will depend upon your skin coloring and the type of peel performed. It is important to see a dermatologist to determine which peels are safe for your particular skin type. Too aggressive peels can result in complications.
With the many skin care products out there it’s important to find ones that are appropriate for your skin type and concerns. Gentle, surfactant-free cleansers like Cetaphil are great for cleansing away excess oils and makeup without stripping away protective surface oils. Depending on your skin type, moisturizers can range from oil-free for acneic skin to heavy for mature and dry skin. I love CeraVe or Eucerin for replenishing moisture and sealing in hydration to dry, compromised skin.
Hand wrinkles are most often caused from excessive sun exposure. Unfortunately, many people often forget to protect their hands from the daily chronic sun exposure we all get. To get started, start to protect your hands every day, with an SPF 30 or higher. And make sure to reapply the SPF regularly throughout the day. Then start with some anti-aging hand cream in the evenings. If this doesn't provide enough improvement, see your dermatologist for possible laser suggestions.
If at 40 you have a lot of blackheads, it is time to see your dermatologist. You will most likely need a prescription cream to help loosen up the blackheads and to help prevent new ones from forming. You can start with an over the counter retinol cream prior to this. However, I find that most patients needs prescription strength creams to really make a significant improvement. Facials may temporarily remove them, but they will just recur without the prescription creams.
Many patients come to me with concerns of excess moles appearing over time. Typically these lesions are actually a condition known as “seborrheic keratoses” which are genetic, benign smooth and warty growths. They are genetic, thus are hard to be prevented. However, your dermatologist has great ways to non-invasively remove these lesions such as liquid nitrogen or various laser modalities. Go see your dermatologist today!
Lime juice is probably not what I would recommend to cleanse your face. Lime juice is a common cause of a problem called a phyto-photo reaction which is often seen in people who are in tropical locations. The lime juice can interact with your skin and the sun to cause brown spots to form. They will eventually fade, but it can take several months. If you are interested in looking for a 100% natural cleanser, I would suggest using luke warm water and a wash cloth.
The “chicken skin” on the arms is a common benign condition known as keratosis pilaris. It is genetic, so there is no cure, but there are great topical treatments to improve the appearance. 2 great over-the-counter options include Cerave SA and Amlactin. Both creams contain gentle acids to exfoliate and hydrate the skin.
Better cover-ups are popping up ever where this year. While rashguards have traditionally been available for kids, now people can find fashionable ones for adults as well. Many of the surf brands, such as Quiksilver are making them for men. And designers, such as Tory Burch, are making them for women.
One of the exciting advances in non-invasive skin rejuvenation is skin tightening using laser, ultrasound or radio frequency technology that keeps surface skin intact and restructures the dermis by stimulating the production of collagen fibers to lift necks, smooth wrinkles and soften lines with no down-time or recovery. These treatments can be very complimentary to a good skincare regime for maintenance.
